The wireless network in your house may connect you to the internet, but there are a few things to check to maximize its potential. Whether you bought a cheap wireless router, or one from Netgear, Linksys, Belkin, or D-Link, they all have similar options to make them work better and safer.

Wireless Network Security

Unless you have no neighbors and live miles from the road, you probably do not want an open wireless network on your wireless cable or DSL (digital subscriber line) router that allows anyone to connect. An open network allows intruders to gain access to all the computers on your network causing the potential for harm. Intruders could also download illegal content on your network, make you exceed your bandwidth limits from your provider, or dramatically slow down your connection.

The first step is to turn on the wireless security setting in your router. Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) is the older choice for network security. It can also be easily cracked by those wishing to get in. Wi-Fi Protected Access (WAP) is a more secure option. WEP and WAP allow you to set up a group of numbers, letters, or a phrase that act as a key to access to your wireless network. Each computer or device will need that key to connect to the secure network.
