Putin's United Russia party suffers serious setbacks
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's United Russia party suffered serious setbacks in the Dec. 4 parliamentary elections as the party saw its majority significantly cut by losing many of the 300 seats it currently holds in the 450-seat Duma, CNN reported. With nearly 100 percent of ballots counted, United Russia still took the largest share of the vote with 49.5 percent, followed by 19.2 percent for the Communist Party. Those numbers indicate United Russia could lose more than 60 seats in Parliament, which would eliminate its clout to change the Constitution unopposed, analysts say. The party's poor performance at the polls is the result of many younger, urban voters growing frustrated with the country's notoriously rigged elections.
