The internet is fuelled, like most of community life, by opinion, by reviews and analysis, by ideas of what’s funny or sad. That’s good because otherwise life would be boring, and more importantly, because it represents free speech. Even practically, free speech is necessary to provide a social buffer against extremism on either side- if it wasn’t for anarchists we might now be living in under totalitarianism. Problems arise with internet extremism when it becomes hateful, and/or has an impact in the real world. However, the necessity outweighs the consequences, no matter how unpleasant they are.
What is Internet Extremism?
Extremism is a wide umbrella. It exists in anything, but, basic division gives us three categories; political, social and moral. They cross over more than would even normally be expected, since extremism tends not to go with rationality and because extremism tends to stem from upset with society in general, sourcing one problem as the cause.
Before the internet became accessible extremist groups were like any other shared interest group- either small separate groups or larger organisations split locally. Extremists in politics have existed for centuries, and the internet only helped them to spread. With the internet came anonymity and an international audience of people very willing to get angry and fan the flames of extremism. It’s obvious that the problem of online hate crime can’t be solved by limiting or editing what can be said online.
