The Internet's power is shown in a sale that took place in October of 2010 when the domain name sex.com, the world's most expensive domain name, was sold for a rather sexy $13 million. The name of the company doing the selling was Escom LLC and the buyer is Clover Holdings Ltd.
Escom LLC bought the sex.com domain in 2006 but in July of 2010, after having declared bankruptcy, they were forced to put it up for sale. The sale did not become official when the bankruptcy judge signed off on it. There is no word from Clover what, if any, changes they intend for the site. Naturally it now is a site that sells sex related merchandise such as sex toys, videos and dating services.
Sex.com Has Had Many Partners
The domain name Sex.com has gone through a few partners since it was first registered in 1994 by an entrepreneur who saw its potential on the burgeoning internet four years after domain name buying went public. Gary Kremen,who was also the founder of match.com and housing.com, and the owner of other sought after domain names, then lost the name sex.com under cloudy circumstances.
