A study presented in November of 2010 at the 76th annual meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians in Vancouver finds that young people staying up late surfing the internet, playing online games, talking on cell phones or sending text messages do so at a risk.

They have a higher chance of suffering from issues related to a lack of sleep such as learning problems, mood disorders and insomnia. They also had a higher chance of having anxiety or depression. In the past it was kids staying up late watching television that lead to many issues around sleep. Now it's more the internet and high-tech phones.

Study on Evening Electronic Media Usage and Young

The study, presented by lead author Dr. Peter Polos of the JFK Medical Center in Edison, N.J., found that in the 10 minutes to four hours before going to bed children using electronic media are receiving on average a monthly total of 3,404 emails and texts.

Dr. Polos and colleagues surveyed 40 young people between the ages of 8 and 22 and asked them about their use of electronic media in the minutes and hours before they went to bed. The boys, the study found, were more likely to look up things on the internet and to play online games while the girls had a higher likelihood of talking on their cell phones and texting.

Parental Help With Improving Sleep Habits

Many young people will send texts, Dr. Polos said, after they have gone to bed, doing so in the dark. And at least according to Dr. Polos the electronic media devices are more problematic than that television for young people.

"Media opportunities like texting and games are worse than TV because they are interactive,” said Dr. Polos, who is a specialist in sleep. “Removing these distractions would maximize children’s sleep time. Bedtime is bedtime and lights out.”
