Reliable broadband internet access is important to the Federal Communications Commission. The U.S. National Broadband Plan intends to track dead zones and gather statistical data that will reveal information about the quality of American internet connections. To do this, the FCC has released free tools for consumers to use to measure internet connection speeds.

FCC Test Access Options

Although the FCC warns that its Consumer Broadband Test is a beta version, the fixed web test and the mobile apps have worked well since the test's debut in March 2010. There are three ways to test broadband internet connection speeds:

• FCC website test from a fixed computer (requires Java)
• iPhone FCC App test to download from the Apple store (works on iTouch, iPhone, and iPad)
• Android FCC App test from the Android market

The tests measure download speed, upload speed, and latency from two possible sources, Ookla and M-Lab.
