So many of us spend way too much time on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Since today's jobs often involve primarily computer work and internet research, we are online, in front of the computer or checking our smart phones so much that it seems that we have been swallowed up by the online world and social media.

So, how do you know when general interest and engagement with social media sites and the internet have crossed the line from past-time to addiction?

Before we go any further, it is important to note that Pamela Rutledge, Ph.D., M.B.A, the Director of the Media Psychology Research Center at UCLA Extension warns us to not use the term addiction lightly: "...[I]t concerns me that, as a society, we are very cavalier tossing around the concept of addiction. Addiction is a serious psychological diagnosis based on specific and seriously life-impairing criteria," Dr. Rutlege told Psychology Today.
