The battles for the position of top Internet browser have been blazing ever since Microsoft arrived on the browser scene in 1995. Whether the Internet Explorer and Netscape battles of old or those of a new generation of browsers like the relative newcomer Google Chrome and the popular Mozilla Firefox (which recently released a much-improved version 4 beta), the consumer will always be the deciding factor.
The reader may be wondering why anyone would use a browser other than the one Microsoft provided with a new computer. Or they may be reading this from a Chrome or Firefox window, delighting in their perceived trendiness for rebelling against the might of “evil” corporations like Microsoft. But the browser war isn’t about trends or rebellion. Not at its core anyhow.
Although the reasons for switching to non-Microsoft browsers may differ from casual user to casual user, the reasons for geeks and web designers is simple: they’re easier to write code for and they’re more secure.
